Rivastigmine for vascular cognitive impairment

Craig, David, Birks, Jacqueline·2004·Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews

Abstract

Background Vascular dementia represents the second most common type of dementia. The classification of vascular dementia broadly follows three clinico-pathological processes: multi-infarct dementia, single strategic infarct dementia and subcortical dementia. As not all victims fulfil strict criteria for dementia and may be significantly cognitively impaired without memory loss, the term vascular cognitive impairment is more useful. Currently, no established standard treatment for vascular cognitive impairment exists. Reductions in acetylcholine and acetyltransferase activity are common to both Alzheimer's disease and vascular cognitive impairment raising the possibility that cholinesterase inhibitors may also be beneficial for the latter. Objectives To assess the efficacy of rivastigmine in the treatment of people with vascular cognitive impairment, vascular dementia, or mixed dementia. Search strategy Trials were searched from the Specialized Register of the Cochrane Dementia and Cognitive Improvement Group on 20 December 2004 using the terms: rivastigmine, exelon, "SDZ ENA 713", SDZ-ENA-713. All major health care databases and many ongoing trial databases within the scope of the Group are searched regularly to keep this Register up to date. Selection criteria All unconfounded randomized double-blind trials comparing rivastigmine with placebo were eligible for inclusion. Data collection and analysis No suitable trials were identified and thus we were unable to extract approp…

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
