The origin of fibrogenic myofibroblasts in fibrotic liver

Open access
Kisseleva, Tatiana·2017·Hepatology

Abstract

Liver fibrosis results from chronic liver injury of different etiologies. It is characterized by dysregulation of physiological remodeling, activation of myofibroblasts, and formation of a fibrous scar. Myofibroblasts develop contractile functions and secrete the extracellular matrix proteins that form this fibrous scar. Myofibroblasts are not present in the normal liver but activate and proliferate in response to injury and inflammation. This review summarizes the understanding and controversies on the contribution of cell populations to the myofibroblasts in liver fibrosis. (H epatology 2017;65:1039‐1043).

  • HSCs are the principal precursor cells that transdifferentiate into αSMA-expressing myofibroblast-like fibrogenic cells following liver injury.

“hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) are the principal precursor cells that undergo “activation” and transdifferentiate into alpha smooth muscle actin (αSMA)‐expressing myofibroblast‐like fibrogenic cells following liver injury”

From Cellular communication network factor 1‐stimulated liver macrophage efferocytosis drives hepatic stellate cell activation and liver fibrosis (2022) · cites this paper as [3]

The HSCs section says hepatic stellate cells are the predominant origin of myofibroblasts in most types of experimental liver disease and acquire a myofibroblast phenotype when activated. The Abstract identifies αSMA expression as a widely used myofibroblast marker. The unqualified reference to liver injury is broader than the source’s finding: the Conclusions identify portal fibroblasts as contributors in early cholestatic injury. (LLM, conf=0.84)

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
