Serum Biomarker for Diagnosis of Endometriosis
Abstract
Endometriosis is estimated to affect 10% of women during the reproductive years. The lack of a non‐invasive diagnostic test significantly contributes to the long delay between onset of the symptoms and definitive diagnosis of endometriosis. This case–control study was conducted to identify specific endometriosis antigens using 2D gel analysis in women with endometriosis (n = 5) and without endometriosis (n = 5). Differentially expresses spots were analyzed using matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization‐time‐of‐flight/mass spectrometry (nanoLC‐ESI‐MS/MS) with MASCOT analysis, in order to identify the corresponding proteins. ELISAs were performed on a different cohort of endometriosis (n = 120) and healthy patients (n = 20) in order to confirm the differential expression of the identified proteins. ROC analysis of ELISA results confirmed the statistical significance of the differential expression for one of these proteins: Zn‐alpha2‐glycoprotein ( P = 0.019). We propose the analysis of the expression level of this protein in the serum as a new non‐invasive diagnostic test for endometriosis. J. Cell. Zn-alpha2-glycoprotein was identified by mass spectrometry as a possible biomarker for endometriosis and confirmed by ELISA to be differentially expressed (P=0.019) in an additional cohort of endometriosis patients (n=120) and healthy controls (n=20).
“In a study conducted by Signorile and Baldi, Zinc (Zn)-alpha2-glycoprotein was identified by mass spectrometry (endometriosis cases n = 5, controls n = 5) as a possible biomarker for endometriosis and confirmed by ELISA to be differentially expressed (P = 0.019) in an additional cohort of endometriosis patients (n = 120) and healthy controls (n = 20) [45].”

About these checks
Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.
Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.
Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
