Glucose‐induced oscillations of intracellular Ca2+ concentration resembling bursting electrical activity in single mouse islets of Langerhans
Open accessAbstract
Intracellular Ca 2+ levels were monitored in single, acutely isolated mouse islets of Langerhans by dual emission Indo‐1 fluorometry. High‐frequency (3.1 min−1) [Ca 2+]i, oscillations with a brief rising time (1–2 s) and 10 s half‐width (‘fast’ oscillations) were detected in 11 mM glucose. Raising the glucose concentration to 16.7 mM increased the duration of these oscillations, which were otherwise absent in 5.5 mM glucose. [Ca 2+]i waves of lower frequency (0.5 min−1) and longer rising time (‘slow’ oscillations) were also recorded. The data indicate that “fast” oscillations are directly related to β‐cell bursting electrical activity, and suggest the existence of extensive networks of electrically coupled cells in the islet.

Electrical activity is accompanied by changes in cytoplasmic free Ca2+, which drive pulsatile insulin secretion.
“Electrical activity is accompanied by changes in cytoplasmic free Ca2+ ([Ca2+]i) (701) (Figure 5C), which in turn drive pulsatile insulin secretion (210).”

About these checks
Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.
Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.
Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
