A Monitoring, Modeling and Decision Support System (DSS) for a Microalgae Production Plant based on Internet of Things Structure
Open accessAbstract
Microalgae cultivation is an emerging and interesting field with an increasing market and with Great prospects for the future both in the food, pharmaceutical, cosmetic and energetic field as well as for other new applications. Microalgae are photosynthetic aquatic microorganism which growth is regulated in-primis by light, temperature, pH and nutrients availability. The monitoring and control of these parameters is crucial in Microalgae cultivation plants because it allows to increase the production and the quality of microalgae biomass feedstock and to prevent the critical conditions for the culture which can compromise the cultivation. In the present work, we present an affordable and easy to use application of Internet of Things (IoT) for the monitoring and control of a microalgae cultivation coupled with a biological modeling for Decision Support System (DSS) to the operator for managing a plant sited in Southern Italy.

The development of prediction models that allow in-/online monitoring of substrates and products is fundamental for process control, enabling the possibility to take decisions and actions in real-time.
“Therefore, the development of prediction models that allow in‐/online monitoring of substrates and products is fundamental for process control, enabling the possibility to take decisions and actions in real‐time (Esposito et al., 2017).”
From Perspectives of fluorescence spectroscopy for online monitoring in microalgae industry (2022) · cites this paper as Esposito et al., 2017
The Introduction describes real-time monitoring of biomass concentration and growth parameters, while §§2.2–2.3 describe predictive simulations that help the operator choose control actions. But §2.1 lists sensors for temperature, irradiance, pH and biomass—not substrates—and the Additional information section says the DSS does not yet support decisions about nutrient supply. The claim's substrate-monitoring component is therefore unsupported. (LLM, conf=0.88)

About these checks
Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.
Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.
Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
