Abstract

I give a brief review of the Gregory-Laflamme instability as originally found for a 5-dimensional black string. This is a chapter of the book "Black Holes in Higher Dimensions" to be published by Cambridge University Press (editor: G. Horowitz)

Claims other papers make about this one

Each is checked against this paper’s own text: does it say what the citing paper says it does?

  • For fixed mass M, black strings have entropy scaling S_BS ∼ M^2 while D=5 black holes have entropy scaling S_BH ∼ M^2 sqrt(R/M).

    “For a fixed mass M , black strings have an entropy that scales like S BS ∼ M 2 while D = 5 black holes have an entropy that scales like S BH ∼ M 2 √ R/M [49].”

From Gravitational memory and compact extra dimensions (2022) · cites this paper as [49]

Section 1.3 compares black-hole and black-string entropies at equal mass and says the black hole becomes thermodynamically preferred when the compact dimension’s length L is sufficiently large. But the equations giving the entropies are not decoded in our copy, so it does not verify either stated M² scaling or the √(R/M) factor. (LLM, conf=0.74)

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
