Multi-mode excitation drives disorder during the ultrafast melting of a C4-symmetry-broken phase

Abstract

Spontaneous C 4-symmetry breaking phases are ubiquitous in layered quantum materials, and often compete with other phases such as superconductivity. Preferential suppression of the symmetry broken phases by light has been used to explain non-equilibrium light induced superconductivity, metallicity, and the creation of metastable states. Key to understanding how these phases emerge is understanding how C 4 symmetry is restored. A leading approach is based on time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory, which explains the coherence response seen in many systems. However, we show that, for the case of the single layered manganite La 0.5 Sr 1.5 MnO 4, the theory fails. Instead, we find an ultrafast inhomogeneous disordering transition in which the mean-field order parameter no longer reflects the atomic-scale state of the system. Our results suggest that disorder may be common to light-induced phase transitions, and methods beyond the mean-field are necessary for understanding and manipulating photoinduced phases.

  • A Drude-Lorentz fit to the P_sat spectrum yields ħγ = 1.2 meV, which is about a third of the equilibrium value and 4 times larger than the previously reported upper bound.

“A Drude-Lorentz fit to this spectrum yields ℏ γ = 1 . 2 meV [22], which is about a third of the equilibrium value [9] and 4 times larger than the previously reported upper bound [7].”

From Optical Saturation Produces Spurious Evidence for Photoinduced Superconductivity in K 3 C 60 (2023) · cites this paper as [9]

The citation [22] is attached to the claim that a Drude–Lorentz fit yields ℏγ = 1.2 meV; the equilibrium comparison and earlier upper bound are cited separately. The source’s Results discuss transient reflectivity and phonon modes, but our copy does not report a Drude–Lorentz fit, a P_sat spectrum, or that 1.2 meV value (searched those terms and scattering rate). • The evidence for photoinduced superconductivity in K3C60 hinges on these similarities.

“The evidence for photoinduced superconductivity in K3C60 hinges on these similarities [6-9].”

From Optical Saturation Produces Spurious Evidence for Photoinduced Superconductivity in K 3 C 60 (2023) · cites this paper as [9]

The Introduction discusses light-induced superconductivity in other materials, and the Discussion considers ultrafast disorder as a possible explanation for such effects. Neither passage addresses K3C60 or says that evidence for its photoinduced superconductivity hinges on similarities. Searches for K3C60 and the claimed evidentiary link found no passage that settles the claim. (LLM, conf=0.74)

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
