Accumulation of formamide in hydrothermal pores to form prebiotic nucleobases
Open accessAbstract
Significance: The aim of this article is to show that prebiotic nucleobases can be formed in hydrothermal pores, through a significant accumulation of formamide resulting from a combination of thermophoresis and convection. We performed numerical finite element calculations for initial formamide concentrations that correspond to early Earth shallow lake conditions and reveal that formamide accumulates at the bottom of hydrothermal pores in about 45–90 d to high concentrated formamide solutions. The conclusion from these findings is that the combination of thermophoretic mass transport and convection is the missing link, which makes the synthesis of prebiotic nucleobases in porous rocks in contact with shallow lakes under early-earth conditions possible.

Compared with HCN, formamide yields a wider variety of prebiotic biomolecules because the presence of oxygen allows an interplay of oxygenous and nitrogenous reactive species that is not possible in HCN oligomerization alone.
“In comparison to the chemistry of HCN, the reasons why formamide yields a wider variety of prebiotic biomolecules are diverse.84–89 The presence of oxygen in its structure allows an interplay of oxygenous and nitrogenous reactive species that is not possible in the HCN oligomerization alone.”

Formamide allows different mechanisms for concentration in aqueous solution, which is crucial to favour condensation/oligomerization reactions rather than hydrolysis.

About these checks
Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.
Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.
Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
