Broadband high-efficiency dielectric metasurfaces for the visible spectrum
Open accessAbstract
Significance: Metasurfaces are optical elements that can mimic and expand on the functionality of refractive optics with a comparatively thin and planar profile. Transmissive metasurfaces suffer from high optical loss at visible wavelengths because of currently used materials and fabrication techniques. This work introduces metasurfaces that operate across the visible spectrum with high efficiencies. As the basis of our metasurfaces, we used a common material, titanium dioxide, and a fabrication method based an atomic layer deposition that creates highly anisotropic nanostructures. The results presented here provide an important advance for realizing optical components at visible wavelengths—e.g., lenses, holograms, and phase shifters—with orders of magnitude reduction in thickness compared with traditional refractive optics.

Patterning, thin-film etching, lift-off, and additive manufacturing all introduce inevitable geometric deviations between experimental devices and ideal, theoretical designs.
“Patterning [25–27], thin-film etching, lift-off, and additive manufacturing [28] all introduce inevitable geometric deviations between experimental devices and ideal, theoretical designs.”
From Robust design of topology-optimized metasurfaces (2019) · cites this paper as [28]
The Figure 3 caption (page unavailable in our copy) reports fabricated nanofins within ±10 nm of their designed dimensions, and the fabrication section says dry etching can increase sidewall roughness. These passages support the possibility of geometric deviations, but not the claim that every listed process inevitably introduces them; the paper does not address additive manufacturing. About these checks
Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.
Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.
Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
