Abstract

The interplay between charge order and superconductivity remains one of the central themes of research in quantum materials. In the case of cuprates, the coupling between striped charge fluctuations and local electromagnetic fields is especially important, as it affects transport properties, coherence, and dimensionality of superconducting correlations. Here, we study the emission of coherent terahertz radiation in single-layer cuprates of the La 2-x Ba x CuO 4 family, for which this effect is expected to be forbidden by symmetry. We find that emission vanishes for compounds in which the stripes are quasi-static but is activated when c -axis inversion symmetry is broken by incommensurate or fluctuating charge stripes, such as in La 1.905 Ba 0.095 CuO 4 and in La 1.845 Ba 0.155 CuO 4 . In this case, terahertz radiation is emitted by surface Josephson plasmons, which are generally dark modes, but couple to free space electromagnetic radiation because of the stripe modulation.

Claims other papers make about this one

Each is checked against this paper’s own text: does it say what the citing paper says it does?

  • In that work, emission is argued to arise from surface Josephson plasmons, which cannot generally couple to light fields but can do so here as a result of Umklapp-like scattering off the stripe order.

“emission is argued to arise from surface Josephson plasmons, which cannot generally couple to light fields but can do so here as a result of Umklapp-like scattering off the stripe order71.”
  • In the stripe-ordered cuprate La2-xBaxCuO4, narrow-band THz radiation following optical excitation occurs when fluctuating or incommensurate charge stripes coexist with superconductivity, leading to breaking of inversion symmetry between CuO2 planes.

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
