“Multiliteracies”: New Literacies, New Learning

Cope, Bill, Kalantzis, Mary·2009·Pedagogies: An International Journal

Abstract

This paper examines the changing landscape of literacy teaching and learning, revisiting the case for a “pedagogy of multiliteracies” first put by the New London Group in 1996 New London Group. 1996. A pedagogy of multiliteracies: Designing social futures. Harvard Educational Review, 66: 60–92. [Crossref], [Web of Science ®] , [Google Scholar]. It describes the dramatically changing social and technological contexts of communication and learning, develops a language with which to talk about representation and communication in educational contexts, and addresses the question of what constitutes appropriate literacy pedagogy for our times.

  • Contemporary conceptions of AI literacy align more closely with operational literacy than with critical literacy.

“The net effect is that contemporary conceptions of AI literacy align more closely with what Cope and Kalantzis (2009) term operational literacy : the capacity to make the system function, rather than critical literacy , which entails understanding the conditions of its production and the interests and limitations embedded within it.”

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
