Enforcing the Wheeler-DeWitt constraint the easy way

Open access
Woodard, R P·1993·Classical and Quantum Gravity

Abstract

The author proves that the Wheeler-DeWitt symmetry must be gauge-fixed in canonical inner products. When this is done every functional integral represents the expectation value of an invariant operator in the presence of an invariant state. A corollary is that certain minisuperspace models are devoid of quantum phenomena.

Claims other papers make about this one

Each is checked against this paper’s own text: does it say what the citing paper says it does?

  • The inner product on the space of solutions of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation must be gauge-fixed, and little is understood about the resulting Hilbert space.

“Further complications come from the fact that the inner product on the space of solutions of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation must be gauge-fixed [282, 144]; again, little is understood about the resulting Hilbert space.”

From Quantum Gravity in 2 + 1 Dimensions: The Case of a Closed Universe (2005) · cites this paper as [282]

The discussion of formula (13c) says that the inner product of invariant states must be gauge-fixed, directly supporting the first part of the claim. The paper discusses unresolved questions about observables and physical time, but does not say that little is understood about the resulting Hilbert space. (LLM, conf=0.85)

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
