Two-way shape memory behavior of semi-crystalline elastomer under stress-free condition
Open accessAbstract
Abstract Semi-crystalline shape memory polymers exhibit two-way shape memory effect (2W-SME) under constant stresses through crystallization-induced elongation upon cooling and melting-induced constriction upon heating. The applied constant stress influenced the prediction and usability of 2W-SME in practical applications without any external force. Here the reversible shape transition in EVA-shaped memory polymer was quantitative analyzed under a suitable temperature range and external stress-free condition. The fraction of reversible strain increased with increasing upper temperature ( T high ) within the temperature range and reached the maximum value of 13.62% at 70 °C. However, reversible strain transition was almost lost when T high exceeded 80 °C because of complete melting of crystalline scaffold, known as the latent recrystallization template. The non-isothermal annealing of EVA 2W-SMP under changing circulating temperatures was confirmed. Moreover, the orientation of crystallization was retained at high temperatures. These findings may contribute to design an appropriate shape memory protocol based on application-specific requirements.

Contributions to stress-free two-way SMPs show the possibility of achieving complex reversible shape changes such as elongation/contraction, bending/unbending, and coiling/uncoiling, and of tuning the actuation temperature.
“Contributions to this class can be found, e.g., in [128-135], and show the possibility of achieving complex reversible shape changes (e.g., elongation/contraction, bending/unbending, coiling/uncoiling), and of tuning the actuation temperature.”

Section 3.2 reports stress-free elongation and contraction and a strip that repeatedly unfolds and refolds between ‘I’ and ‘Z’ shapes. It also reports that annealing can increase the upper operating temperature. The paper does not demonstrate coiling/uncoiling or establish that the actuation temperature itself can be tuned. About these checks
Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.
Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.
Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
