The Theory and Practice of Textual Criticism of the Septuagint

Kauhanen, Tuukka·2025·The Oxford Handbook of Textual Criticism of the Bible

Abstract

This chapter discusses the Septuagint, the ancient Greek translation of the Hebrew Bible, and the problem of reaching its oldest attainable text. The text of the Septuagint has been preserved on a number of manuscripts of varying age and provenance. The original or oldest attainable text of the translation needs to be established word by word using text-critical methods. A special aspect in textual criticism of the Septuagint is the need to take the corresponding Hebrew text into account. This requires reconstructing the readings of the Hebrew base text, knowledge of translation technique, and the habits of the copyists and revisers of the Septuagint. The chapter includes several practical examples of the skills required.

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
