Constraints from inflation on scalar-tensor gravity theories

Open access
García-Bellido, Juan, Wands, David·1995·Physical Review D

Abstract

We show how observations of the perturbation spectra produced during inflation may be used to constrain the parameters of general scalar-tensor theories of gravity, which include both an inflaton and dilaton field. An interesting feature of these models is the possibility that the curvature perturbations on superhorizon scales may not be constant due to nonadiabatic perturbations of the two fields. Within a given model, the tilt and relative amplitude of the scalar and tensor perturbation spectra gives constraints on the parameters of the gravity theory, which may be comparable with those from primordial nucleosynthesis and post-Newtonian experiments. \textcopyright{} 1995 The American Physical Society.

  • In the presence of multiple fields during inflation, the curvature perturbation ζ does not remain constant and varies because non-vanishing isocurvature perturbations act as a source term for the change of ζ.

“However, in the presence of multiple fields during the inflationary epoch, ζ does not remain constant and varies since the non-vanishing isocurvature perturbations act as a source term for the change of ζ [5,6].”

From Spectral running and non-Gaussianity from slow-roll inflation in generalized two-field models (2007) · cites this paper as [5]

The perturbed-field-equations section (p. 7) says entropy perturbations can cause ζ to evolve on super-Hubble scales in a two-field model. But it also says ζ remains constant for adiabatic modes, and the Conclusions (p. 15) identify two-field regimes where it remains constant. The claim overstates this possibility as an inevitable consequence of multiple fields. (LLM, conf=0.88)

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
