Decoherence, chaos, and the correspondence principle
Open accessAbstract
We present evidence that decoherence can produce a smooth quantum-to-classical transition in nonlinear dynamical systems. High-resolution tracking of quantum and classical evolutions reveals differences in expectation values of corresponding observables. Solutions of master equations demonstrate that decoherence destroys quantum interference in Wigner distributions and washes out fine structure in classical distributions, bringing the two closer together. Correspondence between quantum and classical expectation values is also reestablished.

Even in the chaotic case, for some examples, the evolution of W_red(q,p,t) approximates the evolution of a classical phase-space distribution W_class(q,p,t), where both distributions rapidly delocalise.
“On the other hand, at least for some examples it can be shown that, even in the chaotic case, the evolution of W red ( q, p, t ) approximates the evolution of a classical phase-space distribution W class ( q, p, t ) (a Liouville flow with a diffusive contribution from the environment), where both distributions rapidly delocalise (Habib et al . 1998; Zurek 2003, pp. 745-47).”

About these checks
Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.
Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.
Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
