Spatiotemporal antagonism in mesenchymal-epithelial signaling in sweat versus hair fate decision

Open access

Abstract

How to grow hair or sweat glands: Unlike other mammals that must pant or seek shade or water when overheated, humans are able to self-cool to tolerate extreme heat. Sweat glands, which enable humans to run in marathons, are instrumental for this remarkable feat. Lu et al. investigated skin appendage diversity during development of the furry backs and sweaty paws of mice (see the Perspective by Lai and Chuong). They also examined human skin, which is capable of making both hairs and sweat glands in the same area of the body. Epithelialmesenchymal interactions, with varied signaling pathways that act at specific times in development, are key to producing different skin appendages for adaptation to the environment. • SwGs are derived from an epidermal bud of CK5-expressing progenitors, sharing the same origin as epidermal keratinocytes.

“SwGs are derived from an epidermal bud of CK5‐expressing progenitors,[ 2 , 6 ] sharing the same origin as epidermal keratinocytes that can be readily maintained and propagated in vitro.[ 7 ]”

From Sweat Gland Organoids Originating from Reprogrammed Epidermal Keratinocytes Functionally Recapitulated Damaged Skin (2021) · cites this paper as [6]

The ‘Regional differences in BMP pathway genes in skin mesenchymes’ section describes epidermal placodes that develop toward sweat-gland fate, supporting an epidermal-bud origin. The paper’s immunofluorescence methods list a K5 antibody, but the passages do not establish that the buds arise from CK5-expressing progenitors. The statement about epidermal keratinocytes is attached to citation [7], not this source. (LLM, conf=0.83)

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
