Stored Iron and Vascular Reactivity
Abstract
heng et al 1 report that volunteer blood donors with a high donation frequency have significantly greater flow-mediated dilation than low frequency donors.Iron status among the frequent donors approximated a state of iron depletion by assessment of conventional iron markers. The study provides important support for the "iron hypothesis," which suggests a protective effect of iron depletion, ie, the absence of storage iron without anemia, against ischemic heart disease.[2][3][4] The blood donor findings suggest a new direction for the study of endothelial iron status in vivo to complement a growing body of work on iron in cultured endothelial cells. In addition, the finding of lower serum nitrotyrosine in frequent donors is consistent with the hypothesis that myeloperoxidase, a powerful emerging cardiovascular risk factor, 5-8 is modifiable by manipulation of iron status.

Claims other papers make about this one
Each is checked against this paper’s own text: does it say what the citing paper says it does?
Elevated iron stores can predispose to coronary artery disease and thence myocardial infarction.
“It is well known that elevated iron stores can predispose to coronary artery disease and thence myocardial infarction.”
Self-check
Percentages, sums and reported differences re-computed from the paper’s own numbers.
The self-check needs the paper’s full text.

About these checks
Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.
Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.
Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
