Abstract

Objective: We aimed at finding out reliable parameter in the differentiation of iron deficiency anemia (IDA) and beta-thalassemia trait (?-TT) in the adult population subjected to Saudi Arabian Premarital Screening Program. Methods: A total of 620 adults (age range 21-36 years) reported during February 2012 to November 2012. Tests for serum iron and ferritin were carried out in individuals showing low hemoglobin (Hb). All the selected subjects

  • Existing formulas were not designed to differentiate structural hemoglobin variants, combinations of multiple hemoglobinopathies, or cases with a hemoglobinopathy and concomitant iron deficiency.

“These formulas were not designed to differentiate structural hemoglobin variants, combinations of multiple hemoglobinopathies, or cases with a hemoglobinopathy and concomitant iron deficiency (20,21).”

The Introduction describes the indices and formulas as tools for differentiating iron deficiency anemia from β-thalassemia trait. The Discussion notes that coexisting iron deficiency can complicate diagnosis, but the paper does not establish that existing formulas were not designed for structural hemoglobin variants, multiple hemoglobinopathies, or all cases of concomitant iron deficiency. About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
