Verify Your Citations: Accuracy of Reference Citations in Twelve Business and Economics Journals
Abstract
A total of 4,851 bibliographic reference citations from 12 business and economics journals were examined for accuracy to determine if error rates were similar to those of other fields. The journals selected were Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Administrative Science Quarterly, Econometrica, Journal of Consumer Research, Journal of Economic Perspectives, Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Economics, Journal of Marketing, Journal ofRisk and Uncertainty, Quarterly Journal of Economics, mdStrategic Management Journal. Citations printed in the last issue of each journal in 1998 were compared with the original publications to determine their accuracy. An average of 41.7% of citations in the journals contained 1 or more errors. Most appeared in authors' names, followed by errors in pagination, followed by errors in article or chapter titles. of the 93 articles examined, only two had completely error-freee reference lists.

About these checks
Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.
Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.
Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
