Partner abuse, learned helplessness, and trauma symptoms.

Abstract

We examined (a) whether attributional style is related to trauma and depressive symptoms among battered women, and (b) whether women from a battered women's shelter report a more helpless (or hopeless) attributional style than do women from the community. Women from a woman's shelter (n = 49) and a comparison group of women from the community (n = 51) completed measures of attributional style, relationship conflict, and psychological distress. As expected, women from the shelter reported considerably higher levels of conflict and distress. Furthermore, attributional style contributed to the prediction of both depressive and trauma symptoms. However, there was no evidence that battered women's attributional style differed from that of other women. Overall, the results provided some support for the revised learned helplessness model, but they did not support Walker's (2000) contention that partner abuse results in learned helplessness.

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
