Fossilization in Adult Second Language Acquisition

Han, ZhaoHong·2004·Multilingual Matters eBooks

Abstract

This book addresses the issue of fossilization in relation to a key question in SLA research, which is: why are learners, adults in particular, unable to develop the level of competence they have aspired to in spite of continuous and sustained exposure to the target language, adequate motivation to learn, and sufficient opportunity to practice?

  • Among the nine categorized errors observed in students' writing, idiomatic language usage, verb-related errors, and subject-verb agreement are prone to fossilization.

“According to previous studies in error analysis (Han, 2004(Han, , 2009;;Selinker & Han, 1996), idiomatic language usage, verb-related errors, and subject-verb agreement constitute the three specific types of errors identified as being prone to fossilization among the nine categorized errors observed in students' writing.”

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
