Abstract

The larviculture of the Mexican axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum) requires feeding strategies that ensure consistent survival and growth during the early stages, when digestive ontogeny, palatability, and nutrient availability determine the success of rearing. This study evaluated the effect of different live diets on the growth and survival of axolotl larvae reared under controlled conditions, with emphasis on feed acceptance and zootechnical performance. Commonly used live prey in ornamental and support aquaculture (Artemia franciscana nauplii, cladocerans, and ostracods) were compared, and performance variables (intake, weight and length gain, and survival) were recorded throughout the experimental period. Results show that the axolotl consistently accepts and efficiently utilizes A. franciscana, whereas diets containing Daphnia magna exhibit low acceptance and poorer growth performance; ostracods were an intermediate or complementary option depending on the developmental stage and prey size. Overall, the findings support the use of A. franciscana as a primary live food during the initial stages and suggest a planned transition toward larger prey as development progresses.

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
