Abstract

Development of a technique for improving the preservation of syrups from Guiera senegalensis J.F. Gmel (Combretaceae) extracts ABSTRACT Objectives: The conservation of traditional medicines in syrup remains a serious challenge. The objectives of this study were to contribute to the improvement of this conservation method and to propose to the traditional therapists a method that is available to them and that does not require the use of imported chemical products. Methodology and results: The study focused on the formulation and preservation of syrups based on Guiera senegalensis. The different syrups manufactured (D2 syrup, SG syrup, SAM syrup, SMV syrup and SCC syrup) were prepared from the decoction of G. senegalensis leaves. The following techniques were used: hot conditioning, cold conditioning, preservatives (chemicals and herbal essences) and sterilization. The use of Vetiveria nigritana rhizomes followed by hot conditioning and sterilization is the combination of techniques that allowed D2 syrup to be well preserved for more than one year. This combination of techniques is the most appropriate to obtain the best guarantee of prolonged preservation of traditional syrups and to avoid the use of chemicals by traditional practitioners. Conclusion and application of results: The current work indicated that the combined traditional methods ensure an improvement in the shelf life of traditional medicines in syrup form. Further research will be carried out on the microbial load of D2 syrup, which is not within the scope of this work and is not available to traditional practitioners. Keywords: Guiera senegalensis, syrup of traditional medicine, Natural preservation based on medicinal herbs, D2 syrup.

  • The European Pharmacopoeia recommends dosages for 100 g of simple syrup: preservative 0.4 g and flavoring 0.03 g.

“In addition, the European Pharmacopoeia only recommends the dosages for 100 g of simple syrup, in particular, preservative 0.4 g and flavoring 0.03 g (Dénou et al. 2021).”

From Ethnomedicine, improved traditional medicine from Cocos nucifera water and evaluation of antibacterial activity on four bacterial strains in Center, Cameroon (2024) · cites this paper as Dénou et al. 2021

The 'Sirops à base de' section describes the authors’ syrup formulation and preservative concentrations, but does not attribute a dosage recommendation to the European Pharmacopoeia. Searches for the Pharmacopoeia, 100 g of simple syrup, and the stated 0.4 g and 0.03 g amounts found no supporting passage in our copy; page numbers were not available. (LLM, conf=0.72)

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
