Abstract

For 3D object manipulation, methods that build an explicit 3D representation perform better than those relying only on camera images. But using explicit 3D representations like voxels comes at large computing cost, adversely affecting scalability. In this work, we propose RVT, a multi-view transformer for 3D manipulation that is both scalable and accurate. Some key features of RVT are an attention mechanism to aggregate information across views and re-rendering of the camera input from virtual views around the robot workspace. In simulations, we find that a single RVT model works well across 18 RLBench tasks with 249 task variations, achieving 26% higher relative success than the existing state-of-the-art method (PerAct). It also trains 36X faster than PerAct for achieving the same performance and achieves 2.3X the inference speed of PerAct. Further, RVT can perform a variety of manipulation tasks in the real world with just a few ($\sim$10) demonstrations per task. Visual results, code, and trained model are provided at https://robotic-view-transformer.github.io/.

  • A majority of studies evaluate robot performance in environments closely resembling or even identical to the training setup.

“Unfortunately, a majority of studies evaluate robot performance in environments closely resembling or even identical to the training setup.”

From THE COLOSSEUM: A Benchmark for Evaluating Generalization for Robotic Manipulation (2024) · cites this paper as [21]

Section 4.1 (page unavailable) says RVT uses the RLBench training dataset and tests on the same 18 tasks used by PerAct, alongside several baselines. This supports the narrower observation that these evaluations use closely related setups, but the paper does not establish that a majority of robot-performance studies do so. (LLM, conf=0.83)

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
