Abstract

OBJECTIVES: In 2017, the World Health Organization (WHO) published a list of global priority pathogens (GPP) - 12 species of bacteria with critical, high, and medium antibiotic resistance (AR). In this review, our goal was to quantify published reports of AR in this group of pathogens using the Medline-PubMed databases. We also sought to quantify, compare and rank the top five reported AR pathogens globally, regionally and for Bahrain, and describe the evidence from Bahrain for the purpose of infection prevention and control, and to help research and development. METHODS: We conducted a bibliometric, retrospective, descriptive review to search the Medline-PubMed database for reports specific to the WHO GPP list published up to 19 April 2017. RESULTS: , and five on different pathogens. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest the need for a comprehensive, multipronged policy response particularly at the time when the antibiotic pipeline is nearly empty. We recommend thoughtful, integrated infection prevention and control strategies to address the immediate and long-term threats of AR in Bahrain and the GCC.

“with 12 families of bacteria most threatening to human health; these including Acinetobacter baumannii, Escherichia coli, Salmonella enteritidis and Shigella dysenteriae.”

The Introduction describes a WHO list of 12 antibiotic-resistant bacterial species, not 12 families. Table 1 in the Results includes Acinetobacter baumannii and Escherichia coli, but lists Salmonella only as “Salmonella spp.” and does not list Shigella dysenteriae. The claim’s two specific species names are therefore not supported by this copy. (LLM, conf=0.88)

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
