Manifestations of Solitude in Interpersonal Contexts and Negative Peer Experiences: Peer Rejection, Exclusion, and Victimization

Ladd, Gary W., Kochenderfer‐Ladd, Becky, Ettekal, Idean, Clifford, Brandon N.·2021·The Handbook of Solitude

Abstract

Research is reviewed to assess current knowledge about: (1) the types of solitary children that are likely to have negative peer experiences, (2) when during development such experiences tend to occur, and (3) the likelihood that specific forms of solitude precipitate negative peer experiences or the reverse. At present, empirical support favors the premise that solitude, when expressed in social contexts, is a risk factor for peer adversity. It remains unclear, however, whether this risk applies equally for solitary-anxious versus unsociable children, or varies by type of adversity (i.e., peer rejection, exclusion, victimization). Less well examined is the premise that that negative peer experiences precipitate or exacerbate social withdrawal and solitude. Available evidence implies that peer adversities maintain or exacerbate rather than instigate children's solitary propensities. Theoretical and empirical innovations are considered as a means of further illuminating the interplay between solitude and peer adversities within and across developmental epochs.

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
