A Study on Hydrodynamics and Heat Transfer in a Bubble Column Reactor with Yeast and Bacterial Cell Suspensions

Kantarci, Nigar, Ulgen, Kutlu O., Borak, Fahir·2005·The Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering

Abstract

Abstract Hydrodynamics and heat transfer experiments were carried out in a slurry bubble column with air‐water‐yeast cells and air‐water‐bacteria cells systems to investigate gas hold‐up, bubble characteristics and heat transfer coefficients with cell concentrations of 0.1% w/w and 0.4% w/w and superficial gas velocity up to 0.20 m/s. The gas hold‐ups and heat transfer coefficients were found to increase with increasing gas velocity and cell concentration. The heat transfer coefficients were higher at the centre of the column as compared to the near wall region. The development of empirical correlations to predict the heat transfer coefficient in two‐ and three‐phase systems was carried out with ±15% confidence interval at most.

This paper’s full text isn’t openly available, so its claims and self-check weren’t run. The registry and citation checks still apply.

Claims other papers make about this one

Each is checked against this paper’s own text: does it say what the citing paper says it does?

  • Prakash et al. observed an increase of the heat transfer coefficient due to cells, in accordance with the results of Kantarci et al.

“Regarding the impact of cells, they observe an increase of the heat transfer coefficient, which is in accordance to the results of Kantarci et al. [348].”
  • Kantarci et al. correlation pre-factor depends on the concentration of cells (0.09 for 0.1% w/w and 0.102 for 0.4% w/w), while only a weak effect of the cell type on the heat transfer coefficient was found.

“It was found that the pre-factor depends on the concentration of cells (0.09 for 0.1 % w / w and 0.102 for 0.4 % w / w ) while only a weak effect of the cell type on the heat transfer coefficient was found.”

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
