Evaluation of Triplet Aromaticity by the Indene–Isoindene Isomerization Stabilization Energy Method

Abstract

Aromaticity, one of the most important concepts in chemistry, has attracted considerable interest from both experimentalists and theoreticians. According to Baird's rule, triplet annulenes with 4 n π electrons are aromatic. However, the approach to evaluate the magnitude of the triplet aromaticity is less developed. Herein we apply the indene–isoindene isomerization stabilization energy (ISE) method to evaluate the aromaticity in the triplet state. The reliability of this approach can be demonstrated by the strong correlation of these indene–isoindene ISE values with nucleus‐independent chemical shifts [NICS(1)zz] as well as methyl–methylene ISE values. Large [4 n]annulenes have the tendency to be planar to achieve aromaticity in the T 1 state. Steric effects play an important role in the stabilities of large [4 n]annulene isomers.

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
