Studies on brain sterols in normal and pathological conditions
Abstract
Desmosterol (24‐dehydrocholesterol), a normal constituent of developing brain, rapidly disappears during the prenatal and postnatal development, according to the degree of maturation, in all species considered (chicken, mouse, rat, guinea pig, man). During brain maturation, desmosterol concentrations are sensitive to treatments with drugs interfering with sterol synthesis (Triparanol) or with nervous tissue differentiation (thyroxine and propylthiouracil). Desmosterol has been also detected in some experimental and human glial tumors, and the concentra. in the tumor may be specifically increased in the tumoral tissue by the administration of Triparanol.

The values for brain cholesterol concentration in 7-day-old animals, and to some extent in 14-day-old mice, include desmosterol, an immediate precursor of cholesterol.
“Another point regarding the brain cholesterol concentration measurements is that the values for the 7-day-old animals in particular, and to some extent for the 14-day-old mice, include desmosterol, an immediate precursor of cholesterol (Paoletti et al., 1965; Sharpe and Brown, 2013).”

About these checks
Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.
Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.
Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
