Spinors and Space-Time

Penrose, Roger, Rindler, Wolfgang·1984·Cambridge University Press eBooks

Abstract

This volume introduces and systematically develops the calculus of 2-spinors. This is the first detailed exposition of this technique which leads not only to a deeper understanding of the structure of space-time, but also provides shortcuts to some very tedious calculations. Many results are given here for the first time.

Claims the paper makes

This paper’s full text isn’t openly available, so its claims and self-check weren’t run. The registry and citation checks still apply.

Claims other papers make about this one

Each is checked against this paper’s own text: does it say what the citing paper says it does?

  • The photon wave function is the self-dual (or anti self-dual) part of the electromagnetic field tensor.

“For those who are accustomed to using the spinorial description of relativistic particles, the photon wave function is a familiar object. It is the self-dual (or anti self-dual) part of the electromagnetic field tensor (cf. Ref. [29]).”

From On the Wave Function of the Photon (1994) · cites this paper as [29]

  • In the spinorial formalism, the observation that in curved space both helicities propagate without mixing is a simple consequence of the fact that both spinors φAB and φA'B' satisfy separate equations.

“In. the spinorial formalism, our observation that in curved space both helicities propagate without mixing is a simple consequence of the fact that both spinors φAB and φA'B' satisfy separate equations of the form [29]”

From On the Wave Function of the Photon (1994) · cites this paper as [29]

  • Classical Dirac fields necessarily violate the DEC.

“3. classical Dirac fields [necessarily] (Penrose and Rindler 1984)”

From A Primer on Energy Conditions (2017) · cites this paper as Penrose and Rindler 1984

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
