Electrochemical Biomineralization: The Deposition of Calcite with Chiral Morphologies

Kulp, Elizabeth A., Switzer, Jay A.·2007·Journal of the American Chemical Society

Abstract

The biominerals calcite and aragonite are electrodeposited by electrochemically generating base in a solution containing Ca 2+ and HCO 3 - . Although calcite crystallizes in the achiral space group R 3̄ c, orientations of calcite which lack mirror or glide plane symmetry are chiral. Chiral morphologies of calcite are electrodeposited in the presence of tartaric, malic, and aspartic acid. Calcite grows with left-handed spirals when deposited from l -tartaric acid but grows with right-handed spirals when deposited from l -malic acid or l -aspartic acid. A racemic mixture of d - and l -malic acid produces an achiral microstructure, instead of producing a racemic mixture of chiral microstructures.

We couldn’t retrieve this paper’s full text, so its claims and self-check weren’t run. The registry and citation checks still apply.

Claims other papers make about this one

Each is checked against this paper’s own text: does it say what the citing paper says it does?

  • Amino acids modify calcite crystal growth leading to asymmetric morphologies.

“Conversely, it is well established that amino acids modify the crystal growth of calcite crystals in a selective manner leading to asymmetric morphologies, e.g.upon crystallization 263,264 or electrodeposition (Fig. 10a).259”
  • Enantiopure amino acids induce asymmetric morphologies of CaCO3-based crystals.

“Asymmetric morphologies of CaCO 3 -based crystals induced by enantiopure amino acids.”

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
