Correlations between the Characteristic Rheological Quantities and Molecular Structure of Long-Chain Branched Metallocene Catalyzed Polyethylenes

Stadler, Florian J., Karimkhani, Vahid·2011·Macromolecules

Abstract

Different rheological quantities, such as the zero shear-rate viscosity η 0 and the linear steady-state elastic compliance J e 0 of long-chain branched metallocene-catalyzed ethene homopolymers and ethene-/α-olefin copolymers with a polydispersity M w /M n ≈ 2, were correlated with the molar mass M w and degree of long-chain branching λ. A linear reference for the δ(| G * |) plot was used to show the effect of long-chain branches on this rheological property. The linear steady-state elastic compliance J e 0 correlated with the zero shear-rate viscosity increase factor η 0 /η 0 lin and the characteristic phase angle δ c . However, the latter only works when compensating for the influence of the molar mass on J e 0 by the relationship between J e 0 and M w established elsewhere (Stadler and Münstedt, JoR, 2008). The characteristic phase angle δ c and zero shear-rate viscosity enhancement factor η 0 /η 0 lin are linked to each other by the linear dependencies for the type I and type II viscosity functions.

  • Stadler et al. report that correlations between long-chain branched polyethylenes and linear polyethylenes can be made by the addition of a scaling factor, where the zero shear viscosity of the branched polyolefin is normalized by that of a linear polyethylene of the same Mw.

“Stadler et al ( 30 ) report that correlations between long-chain branched polyethylenes and linear polyethylenes can be made by the addition of a scaling factor, where the zero shear viscosity of the branched polyolefin is normalized by that of a linear polyethylene of the same M w.”

  • The zero-shear viscosity of the copolymers shows non-linear relationships with average degree of branching, consistent with literature observations.

“However, our observations of non-linear relationships between zero-shear viscosity and average degree of branching are consistent with observations from the literature.”

  • The authors discuss that architectures such as LDPE and comb-like PE do not adhere to the linear polyethylene η0-Mw relation even with this scaling factor applied.

“Additionally, the authors discuss that architectures such as LDPE and comb-like PE do not adhere to the linear polyethylene η 0 -M w relation even with this scaling factor applied.”

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
