Abstract

A comprehensive understanding of the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) composition is crucial to developing high-energy batteries based on lithium metal anodes. A particularly contentious issue concerns the presence of LiH in the SEI. Here we report on the use of synchrotron-based X-ray diffraction and pair distribution function analysis to identify and differentiate two elusive components, LiH and LiF, in the SEI of lithium metal anodes. LiH is identified as a component of the SEI in high abundance, and the possibility of its misidentification as LiF in the literature is discussed. LiF in the SEI is found to have different structural features from LiF in the bulk phase, including a larger lattice parameter and a smaller grain size ( + transport and explain why an ionic insulator, like LiF, has been found to be a favoured component for the SEI. Finally, pair distribution function analysis reveals key amorphous components in the SEI.

Claims other papers make about this one

Each is checked against this paper’s own text: does it say what the citing paper says it does?

  • SEIs recovered from HCE have higher (LiF)sei and lower dead Li0 contents compared with their LCE counterparts.

“The relative contents of LiH, LiF and dead Li 0 in SEI are quantified, showing higher (LiF) sei and lower dead Li 0 contents in SEIs recovered from the HCE compared with their LCE counterparts.”
  • PDF technique differentiated key amorphous components originating from solvent decomposition (no good components) or anion decomposition (good components), mostly SEI LiFsei.

  • High abundance of LiH in the SEI was confirmed by XRD.

“High abundance of LiH was confirmed by XRD.”
  • A new type of LiF, named SEI (LiF)sei, differs from bulk LiF by having a larger lattice parameter and smaller grain size (<3 nm), and is favored for Li+ transport.

“Differing from conventional bulk LiF, they discovered a new type of LiF differing from bulk LiF, and named it as SEI (LiF) sei , which has unique structural features including larger lattice parameter and smaller grain size (< 3 nm), and is favored for Li + transport.”

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
