V. – Reduction of nitrites to hydroxylamine by hydrogen sulphide
Open accessAbstract
THE solution of an alkali nitrate, saturatled with hydrogen sulphide, and then acidified with hydrochloric or sulphuric acid, yields sulphur, nitric oxide, and ammonia, but no hydroxylamine,* the presence of this being incompatible with that of what is known as f r e e nitrous acid. When the escaping gases are collected out of contact with air, they slowly deposit sulphur, and do so more quickly on bubbling through water into tlie air, in consequence of reactions between hydrogen sulphide, nitric oxide, and oxygen, but still no hydroxylamine appears. When, however, siZz;er nitrite suspended in water is treated with hydrogen sulphide, besides the sulphur, nitric oxide, and ammonia, still abundantly formed, and the silver sulphide, a considerable quantity of hydroxylamine is also produced. On filtering off the silver sulphide, adding hydrochloric acid to convert the hydrosulphides into hydrochlorides, and evaporating to dryness, a mixture of * Evidence of this will be submitted in our forthcoming paper on mercury nitrites, together with an account of the formation of the nitrite, and the precipitation of the metallic mercury.VOL. Under acidic conditions, the reaction of sulfide with nitrite leads to a range of nitrogen- and sulfur-containing products.
“There is a considerable amount of lesser-known older work on the reaction of sulfide with nitrite demonstrating that under acidic conditions the reaction leads to a range of products.”

About these checks
Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.
Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.
Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
