Pulse radiolysis of sulphur compounds. Part 3.—Repair by hydrogen transfer of a macromolecule irradiated in aqueous solution

Abstract

Free radical repair by hydrogen transfer from a sulphydryl compound (cysteamine) has been extended to a polymeric system. Repair rate constants vary from 2.6 × 107 M–1 sec–1 for ethylene glycol to 5 × 106 M–1 sec–1 for polyethylene oxide (PEO) of molecular weight 20,000. The analysis of rate data for polymers of m.w. >200 is complicated by competing radical-radical reactions. A comprehensive reaction scheme is proposed and the kinetic equations solved numerically. The effects of pH and molecular weight on the repair rate have also been studied. Some further data on the pulse radiolysis of cysteamine solutions, including a determination of the extinction coefficient of the radical-ion RSSR–(ε4100= 9.4 ± 0.5 × 103 M–1 cm–1) are presented.

Claims the paper makes

This paper’s full text isn’t openly available, so its claims and self-check weren’t run. The registry and citation checks still apply.

Claims other papers make about this one

Each is checked against this paper’s own text: does it say what the citing paper says it does?

  • The set of reactions resulting in formation of superoxide radicals is omnipresent and a critical component in biological systems.

“The above set of reactions, resulting in the formation of superoxide radicals, has been shown to be omnipresent and a critical component in biological systems (Poole 2015; Adams et al. 1969; Davies et al. 2022).”

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
