Abstract

Significance: Spin-nematic state in frustrated ferromagnet is one of the exotic states of matter at high magnetic field that could arise as the Bose–Einstein condensation of the two-magnon bound state. Its experimental detection in a real material has long been hindered by the fact that the order parameter of the spin-nematic state, spin quadrupole moment, is hard to detect with conventional magnetic probes available in high magnetic field. Here we design a calorimeter for the pulsed magnetic field studies and perform state-of-the-art measurements of heat capacity and magnetocaloric effect up to 33 T. These results provide strong prima facie evidence for a spin-nematic state in the copper-based mineral volborthite.

  • Recent improvement of the field stabilization technique fully removes the risk of temperature instability induced by coupling between magnetic fields and sample temperature.

“With the recent improvement of the field stabilization technique that fully removes the risk of the temperature instability induced by the coupling between magnetic fields and sample temperature, 25,26 it likely becomes possible to measure thermal conductivity under pulsed magnetic fields.”

From Simultaneous measurement of specific heat and thermal conductivity in pulsed magnetic fields (2023) · cites this paper as [25]

The Methods section, “Heat Capacity Measurements at Flat-Top Pulsed Magnetic Fields” (page not provided), describes improved field stabilization and reports that temperature fluctuations were suppressed to within ±0.01 K. That supports reduced temperature instability, but not the claim that its risk was fully removed. (LLM, conf=0.88)

  • The feedback-controlled flat-top pulse has enabled measurement of a variety of physical quantities under high magnetic fields such as specific heat, NMR, and current-voltage characteristics.

“The feedback-controlled flat-top pulse has enabled us to measure a variety of physical quantities under high magnetic fields such as specific heat, 21,25,26 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), 22,24 current-voltage characteristic, 23 etc.”

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
