Organizational Change: A Conceptual Framework to Advance the Evidence Base

Packard, Thomas·2013·Journal of Human Behavior in the Social Environment

Abstract

There is a vast literature on organizational change, but much of it has a weak evidence base, often using only case studies or axioms based on authors' experiences. Quantitative studies are less common and typically address a limited number of variables. Implementation science research is more advanced but typically addresses only program-level change. This paper presents a comprehensive framework of relevant variables and perspectives from which to view organizational change and offers a research agenda, with particular attention to preconditions for change (e.g., change capacity) and organizational change tactics, and their relationships with change outcomes—promising areas for research.

Claims other papers make about this one

Each is checked against this paper’s own text: does it say what the citing paper says it does?

  • All community or organisational characteristics jointly influence implementation climate, system readiness for change and capacity for change and thus the chances of an intervention being implemented successfully.

“All of these community or organisational characteristics jointly influence implementation climate [14, 15], system readiness for change [14, 17, 67] and capacity for change [15, 62, 68, 69] and thus the chances of an intervention being implemented successfully.”

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
