Hybrid and particle-in-cell models of a stationary plasma thruster

Abstract

Stationary Plasma Thrusters (SPTs) are ion sources used for satellite propulsion. They operate at low gas density and the electrons are confined by a magnetic field perpendicular to the discharge axis. Experimental observations and recent simulations (hybrid models) based on a simple description of electron transport have shown that SPTs are subject to strong current oscillations due to ionization instabilities. In this paper we present comparisons between the predictions of the simple hybrid model and those from a more detailed PIC-MCC (particle-in-cell Monte Carlo collisions) simulations. The good qualitative agreement between hybrid and PIC models confirms the interpretation of the low-frequency oscillations deduced from our previous work.

Each is checked against this paper’s own text: does it say what the citing paper says it does?

  • Numerical tricks (enlarged vacuum permittivity, reduced ion mass, thruster size scaling) are still used in many simulations to reduce computational time.

“Nevertheless, numerical tricks (e.g. enlarged vacuum permittivity and/or reduction of ion mass or thruster size scaling) are still used in many simulations to reduce the computational time (see Refs. 59-64 for E × B thrusters, and Refs. 65-67 for PATs).”

From Plasma propulsion modeling with particle-based algorithms (2023) · cites this paper as [64]

Section 2.2.1 defines vacuum permittivity and ion mass in the model equations, but does not say either was altered to save computational time. Section 2.1 describes an artificial collision frequency for electron transport, a different adjustment. Searches for enlarged permittivity, reduced ion mass, thruster-size scaling, and computational-time savings found no passage addressing the attributed claim. (LLM, conf=0.74)

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
