Abstract

Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles were synthesized on diatomite (DE) surface by a low temperature sol gel technique, starting from zinc acetate dihydrate (Zn(CH 3 COO) 2 · 2H 2 O) solution in water/ethyl alcohol, in presence of triethanolamine (TEA) with functions of Zn 2+ chelating agent, catalyst and mediator of nanoparticle growth on DE surface. Microstructural features were investigated by field emission scanning electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction. ZnO crystalline nanoparticles, well distributed both on the surface and into the porous architecture of diatomite, were obtained just after the synthesis carried out at 80 °C without the need of calcination treatments. The optical properties of ZnO/DE hybrid powders were measured for the first time by means of photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS). A new method to retrieve both the optical absorption and scattering coefficients from PAS is here discussed for powder aggregates. The fingerprint of the zinc oxide nanoparticles has been highlighted in the Mie scattering resonance in the UV–Vis range, and in the enhancement of the optical absorption with respect to diatomite.

  • Very limited data are available on photoacoustic studies of single-cell organisms (prokaryotes and eukaryotes) containing light-absorbing chromophores.

“To the best of our knowledge, very limited data [[8], [9], [10]] are available on the photoacoustic studies of single-cell organisms—both prokaryotes (e.g. cyanobacteria) and eukaryotes (e.g. diatoms)—which contain light-absorbing chromophores such as chlorophyll or carotenoids.”

The Introduction (page not provided) identifies diatoms as photosynthetic microorganisms but says the material studied was diatomite, a fossil mixture of frustules. Section 3 (page not provided) reports photoacoustic spectroscopy of diatomite powders, supporting the diatom-related example. The paper does not establish that such studies are scarce or report photoacoustic measurements of intact, chromophore-containing single cells. (LLM, conf=0.84)

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
