Primordial non-Gaussianities in single-field inflation

Abstract

We calculate the three-point function for primordial scalar fluctuations in a single-field inflationary scenario where the scalar field Lagrangian is a completely general function of the field and its first derivative. We obtain an explicit expression for the three-point correlation function in a self-consistent approximation scheme where the expansion rate varies slowly, analogous to the slow-roll limit in standard, single-field inflation. The three-point function can be written in terms of the familiar slow-roll parameters and three new parameters which measure the non-trivial kinetic structure of the scalar field, the departure of the speed of sound from the speed of light, and the rate of change of the speed of sound.

  • Inflationary models with higher derivative operators, such as ghost inflation or inflation based on the Dirac-Born-Infeld action, can produce higher non-Gaussianity, possibly detectable.

“On the other hand, inflationary models with higher derivative operators, such as ghost inflation or inflation based on the Dirac-Born-Infeld action, can produce higher non-Gaussianity [6, 7, 8, 9], possibly detectable.”

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
