The 2019 ESC Guidelines on diabetes, pre-diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases developed in collaboration with the EASD

Grant, Peter J, Cosentino, Francesco·2019·European Heart Journal

Abstract

The most clinically relevant new aspects of the 2019 version of the ESC Guidelines compared with the previous version published in 2013 relate to: ... The prevalence of diabetes continues to increase, with 60 million thought to have diabetes in Europe in 2017 and predictions of more than 600 million individuals with diabetes worldwide by 2045. These numbers carry a huge burden of morbidity and mortality with a high prevalence of microvascular disease affecting the eyes, nerves, and kidneys and macrovascular disease leading to CV, cerebrovascular, and peripheral vascular disease. The combination of diabetes, CKD, hypertension, and dyslipidaemia make a potent contribution to the development of CV disease and the 2019 guidelines pay particular attention to the new information from clinical trials that address the management of these issues. Whilst updating our recommendations has been a key element in the new guidelines we have continued to emphasize the importance of making individualized care decisions in collaboration with other healthcare workers and informed patients as outlined in the 2013 guidelines.

Claims other papers make about this one

Each is checked against this paper’s own text: does it say what the citing paper says it does?

  • The American Diabetes Association, the American College of Cardiology, and the European Society of Cardiology recommend that patients with type 2 diabetes with established or at risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease, or heart failure be prescribed an SGLT2i or GLP-1 RA, irrespective of glycemic control or metformin use.

“These findings prompted the American Diabetes Association,2 the American College of Cardiology,3 and the European Society of Cardiology4 to recommend that patients with type 2 diabetes with established or at risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease, or heart failure, be prescribed an SGLT2i or GLP-1 RA, irrespective of glycemic control or metformin use.”
  • In general, comorbidities were independently associated with pharmacy dispensing of these drugs, which aligns with national guidelines.

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
