Testing the neutrality of matter by acoustic means in a spherical resonator
Open accessAbstract
Measurements to test the neutrality of matter by acoustic means are reported. The apparatus is based on a spherical capacitor filled with gaseous SF${}_{6}$ excited by an oscillating electric field. The apparatus has been calibrated measuring the electric polarizability. Assuming charge conservation in the $\ensuremath{\beta}$ decay of the neutron, the experiment gives a limit of ${\ensuremath{\epsilon}}_{\mathrm{p}\ensuremath{-}\mathrm{e}}\ensuremath{\lesssim}1\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}21}$ for the electron-proton charge difference, the same limit holding for the charge of the neutron. Previous measurements are critically reviewed and found to be inaccurate.

The above constraint on y is consistent with the result obtained in lab experiments if λ_A ∼ d_H ∼ 10^28 cm.

About these checks
Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.
Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.
Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
