Single biphoton ququarts as either pure or mixed states
Abstract
We analyze features of mixed biphoton polarization states, which arise from pure states of polarization-frequency biphoton ququarts after averaging over frequencies of photons. For mixed states, we find their concurrence $C$, Schmidt parameter $K$, degree of polarization $P$, as well as the von Neumann mutual information $I$. In some simple cases, we also find the relative entropy ${S}_{\mathrm{rel}}$ and the degree of classical correlations ${C}_{\mathrm{cl}}$. In mixed states, the Schmidt parameter does not characterize the degree of entanglement anymore, as it does in pure states. Nevertheless, the Schmidt parameter remains useful even in the case of mixed states because it remains directly related to the degree of polarization. We compare results occurring in the cases of full pure polarization-frequency states of ququarts and mixed states (averaged over frequencies). Differences between these results can be seen in experiments with and without frequency filters in front of a detector.

When only polarization measurements are used (or equivalently, when the ququart's state is averaged over photon frequencies), the originally pure biphoton ququart state appears as a mixed two-qubit biphoton polarization state.
“If in experiments one uses only polarization measurements, the originally pure states of ququarts can be seen as mixed biphoton polarization states.”

The symmetry of the total wave function under transposition of photon variables is an obligatory feature of two-boson pure states.
“This is the obligatory feature of two-boson pure states, which often is not taken seriously but which manifests itself, e.g., in the existence of MPS discussed below and in Ref. [3].”

About these checks
Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.
Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.
Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
