Impurity-induced states on the surface of three-dimensional topological insulators

Abstract

We calculate the modification of the local electronic structure caused by a single local impurity on the surface of a three-dimensional topological insulator. We find that the local density of states around the Dirac point of the electronic spectrum at the surface is significantly disrupted near the impurity by the creation of low-energy resonance state(s)---however, this is not sufficient to (locally) destroy the Dirac point. We also calculate the nontrivial spin textures created near the magnetic impurities and discover anisotropic Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) coupling between them.

  • In topological insulators, surface-state electrons are confined to two-dimensional Dirac cones, and interactions between deposited impurities are suggested to be mediated over many nanometres.

“In topological insulators, surface-state electrons are naturally confined to the surface in two-dimensional Dirac cones, and it is suggested that interactions between deposited impurities can be mediated over many nanometres (see the illustration in Fig. 4c; refs 11,26).”
  • Because magnetic-field perturbations from the submonolayer iron coating are weak, the magnetic-phase term in perturbative Hamiltonians can be discounted, and the dominant magnetic effects are expected to be described by a local Heisenberg-exchange term representing direct wavefunction overlap between surface electrons and spin-polarized Fe 3d orbitals.

“Because magnetic-field perturbations from the submonolayer iron coating are quite weak, the magnetic-phase term in perturbative Hamiltonians can be discounted, and the dominant magnetic effects are expected to be described by a local Heisenberg-exchange term representing direct wavefunction overlap (hopping) between surface electrons and spin-polarized Fe 3d orbitals 11 .”

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
