Topological and magnetic phases of interacting electrons in the pyrochlore iridates
Open accessAbstract
We construct a model for interacting electrons with strong spin-orbit coupling in the pyrochlore iridates. We establish the importance of the direct hopping process between the Ir atoms, and use the relative strength of the direct and indirect hopping as a generic tuning parameter to study the correlation effects across the iridates family. We predict quantum phase transitions between conventional and/or topologically nontrivial phases. At weak coupling, we find topological insulator and metallic phases. As one increases the interaction strength, various magnetic orders emerge. The topological Weyl semimetal phase is found to be realized in these different orders, one of them being the all-in/all-out pattern. Our findings establish the possible magnetic ground states for the iridates and suggest the generic presence of the Weyl semimetal phase in correlated magnetic insulators on the pyrochlore lattice. We discuss the implications for existing and future experiments.

In the pyrochlore iridates where the interaction scale is comparable to the spin-orbit scale, this leads to a rich mean-field phase diagram featuring topological insulating and semimetallic phases with transitions driven by the type of magnetic order.
“This was a key feature in the early development of this subject and in the pyrochlore iridates where the interaction scale is comparable to the spin-orbit scale (Wan et al. , 2011; Witczak-Krempa and Kim, 2012) this leads to a rich mean-field phase diagram featuring topological insulating and semimetallic phases with transitions driven by the type of magnetic order.”

About these checks
Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.
Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.
Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
