Quantum fluctuations around the electroweak sphaleron

Open access
Baacke, J., Junker, S.·1994·Physical Review D

Abstract

We present an analysis of the quantum fluctuations around the electroweak sphaleron and calculate the associated determinant which gives the one-loop correction to the sphaleron transition rate. The calculation differs in various technical aspects from a previous analysis by Carson and co-workers so that it can be considered as independent. The numerical results differ also, by several orders of magnitude, from those of this previous analysis; we find that the sphaleron transition rate is much less suppressed than found previously.

  • The resolvent method states that the ratio of the determinants of two operators can be written as an integral of some modified Green's function.

“The method states that the ratio of the determinants of two operators can be written as an integral of some modified Green's function.”

Section 6 (pp. 11–12) defines Green functions for the fluctuation and vacuum operators and says that integrating the resulting expression gives a regulated version of the logarithm of the fluctuation determinant. This supports the resolvent-method connection, but the integral gives the logarithm of the determinant ratio, not the ratio directly as the claim states. (LLM, conf=0.82)

  • The ratio of functional determinants is computed using the resolvent method, developed in prior work and used in other works.

“To do so, we employ the resolvent method , developed in [24-27] and used in, e.g., [17, 28-30].”

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
