Late-stage phase separation and hydrodynamic flow in a binary liquid mixture

Chan, C. K., Goldburg, W. I.·1987·Physical Review Letters

Abstract

Light-scattering measurements were made in a binary mixture in the late stage of spinodal decomposition, when gravity has become important. We observe macroscopic flow in the mixture, following which the scattering I(k,t) falls as ${k}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}4}$. This implies that the scattering is mainly from surfaces between growing domains. The measurements reveal an unexpectedly large rate of disappearance of the surface area per unit volume in the phase-separating system. The effect is probably related to a gravity-driven instability which gives rise to the flow and which was also investigated.

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
