Ladder Proof of Nonlocality without Inequalities: Theoretical and Experimental Results

Open access

Abstract

We show how a previous demonstration of nonlocality without inequalities for two spin-half particles can be improved so that a greater proportion of the pairs are shown to be subject to a contradiction with local realism. This is achieved by considering more settings of the apparatus at each end. Also, we report on an experimental realization employing a tunable source of polarization entangled photons. The experimental results violate locality (modulo, the efficiency loophole).

  • Hardy's scheme was scaled up so that (50 - h)% of photon pairs lead to coincidence events prohibited by local realism, demonstrated by Boschi et al. 1997.

“Hardy's scheme was later scaled up, so that (50 -h)% of photon pairs lead to coincidence events prohibited by local realism (where h is any small finite number). The effect was demonstrated in an experiment by Boschi et al. 1997.”

“For instance, for two-particle states, Hardy (1993) has found situations, where quantum mechanics predicts a specific result to occur sometimes, and local realism predicts the same result never to occur (for an experiment see Boschi et al., 1997).”

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
