Thickness-Dependent Curie Temperatures of Ultrathin Magnetic Films: Effect of the Range of Spin-Spin Interactions

Zhang, Renjun, Willis, Roy F.·2001·Physical Review Letters

Abstract

We present a simple model of spin-spin coupling which provides insight into the nature of the rapid decrease in the Curie temperature with decreasing thin film thickness $n$ (number of monolayers). The shift of Curie temperature $t(n){\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}1\ensuremath{-}T}_{c}(n){/T}_{c}(\ensuremath{\infty})$ follows the usual power law $t(n)\ensuremath{\sim}{n}^{\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\lambda}}$ in thin films crossing over to linear behavior $t(n)\ensuremath{\sim}n$ in the ultrathin film thickness limit. Experimental results for ferromagnetic thin films are compared, and shown to follow curves of $t(n)$ with $\ensuremath{\lambda}$ values dependent on the nature of the spin-spin interactions.

Claims the paper makes

This paper’s full text isn’t openly available, so its claims and self-check weren’t run. The registry and citation checks still apply.

Claims other papers make about this one

Each is checked against this paper’s own text: does it say what the citing paper says it does?

  • The exact time at which the bandgap appears is difficult to identify, probably because there is no long-range order of iron spins on the surface and differently ordered domains contribute differently gapped signals.

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
